| Notes |
1. Chassis - backplanes are unique. If you select a 2.5" backplane you cannot switch to a 3.5" backplane. a. The 3.5" x 6 slot backplane is unable to mount a floppy drive. b. 3.5" x 4 and 3.5" x 6 backplanes are swappable. c. Drives are now SAS, think of SCSI using a serial interface. SAS requires a SAS backplane, they will not plug into a SATA backplane. d. You can use either SAS or SATA drives in the 3.5" backplane. 2. PCIe and PCIx riser cards are interchangeable 3. Memory - servers with the following cpu's ship with PC4200F memory. 5050, 5060, 5080, 5110, 5120 i.e. 667 MHz and 1066 MHz FSB. a. The FBDIMM shipping with the 2950 is a serial bit transfer DIMM as opposed the 2850 parallel bit transfer DIMM. 4. Rail kits are unique to the server. The rail kit is a combo versa/rapid rail. The 2850 or 2650 rail kits will not work. 5. Dual core cpu notes. The 5100 series processors support a 4MB cache which is dual core. Each core can use all or part of the 4MB cache. Hence it is no longer described as a 2 x 2M core cache. Think higher performance for database applications. Quad core cpus require a unique motherboard E54XX cpus require another unique motherboard - aint this great!!!! 6. The Perc 5/i or 6/i internal raid controller can support SAS or SATA. When using a SATA software raid array, initialization times are 2-4 times longer than SAS. Performance is slower, SATA drives cannot be accessed as quickly as SAS drives. You pay for what you get. If you want performance buy SAS. If you want the larger capacity use SATA and expect slower access and performance. 7. 2.5" SAS drives max capacty is now 146 gigs 10K. 8. CPU power draw is much reduced with the 5100 series cpu. 65 watts each versus the 90 watt draw on the current 2850 cpu's. Beware of the 5080 & 5060 cpu, 135 watts required per cpu!!! This dual cpu (5060) server will use $136 per year more in electricity than a 5100 series. (assumes .12 cents per kilowatt hour).
9. Performance is much enhanced over
the older 800 FSB Xeon. Performance even exceeds the AMD Athlon
series. |
